Taking the reins of a beloved Uptown Waterloo boutique is no small feat, but Vivian Mirani – the new proprietor of Truth Beauty Company – has embraced the challenge with vision and care. For more than a decade this cherished business has quietly built a loyal following for its thoughtful curation of trusted clean beauty products and warm, knowledgeable service. Under Vivian’s leadership the boutique is entering a new chapter: continuing to please clients with effective, luxurious, eco-friendly products while strengthening its reputation as a destination for clean (and green) beauty.

You’ll find this smart shop tucked into the heart of Uptown Waterloo down a bright, wide set of stairs, just beneath the bustling Princess Café and Princess Twin Cinemas. When you slip through the shared entrance and head downstairs, you enter a coherent, tranquil space. The walls are lined with shelves of elegant bottles and softly glowing jars. There’s even a section devoted to men’s shaving needs and skincare – including a healthy lineup of shavers by Cambridge’s own Henson Shaving. The curated space is grounded by a large centre table featuring everything from raw juice masks by ESW Beauty to mineral bras and undies by Huha. The atmosphere is calm and quietly indulgent – a peaceful refuge from the bustle above.

Vivian’s path to her moment of proprietorship began long before she first joined the team as the holistic skin therapist in the treatment room a few years back. Although she was born and raised in the Kitchener-Waterloo region, she spent six formative years living in Iraqi Kurdistan – an experience that broadened her worldview and deepened her appreciation for culture, community, and wellbeing. After returning to KW she pursued aesthetics and began working hands-on with skin – an experience that clarified her passion.

‘I remember being a teenager and imagining owning a shop filled with beautiful skincare and makeup,’ she recalls on a sunny morning in late February when I stop by to chat about her vision for the business. ‘I dreamed of products that felt luxurious but were also safe for our bodies and the planet.’ That early vision never left her. When the opportunity arose for her to take over Truth Beauty from founder and close friend Jen Freitas, the moment felt unexpectedly aligned.

‘The shop reflects that original idea,’ she says. ‘It’s a place where people can discover beautiful products, learn about their skin, and feel comfortable exploring what works for them.’

Community has been one of the most rewarding aspects of Vivian’s taking possession of the place. Regular clients (many have been visiting the shop for years) drop in for advice, to try a new serum, or simply to enjoy a conversation about skincare. ‘I’ve been able to evolve the brand gently while still honouring the strong foundation it was built on,’ Vivian says. A foundation that rests on a simple but rigorous philosophy: that every product on the shelf has to earn its place. Truth Beauty operates like a carefully edited gallery of skincare, cosmetics, and fragrance. It doesn’t try to carry everything. Instead, each brand is evaluated for formulation integrity, performance, and ethos.

‘The products have to work,’ Vivian notes. ‘They have to feel beautiful to use, and they have to be something I genuinely believe in recommending.’ Canadian and women-owned brands are especially well represented. Lines such as RMS Beauty sit alongside emerging innovators like Somerset Moss and Etymologie. The common thread is thoughtful formulation, transparency, and results.

Everything in the boutique is clean and non-toxic – free from ingredients that raise concerns about hormone disruption or long-term health impacts. For many clients, discovering the shop introduces a new way of thinking about beauty products. ‘People are often surprised that clean beauty doesn’t feel like a compromise,’ Vivian says. ‘It feels luxurious – and it works.’ She points to products that regularly convert skeptics into believers. A concealer from Hynt Beauty rivals the texture and finish of prestige brands, while a hydrating mist from Apoterra Skincare turns a simple skincare step into something quietly ritualistic.

For clients seeking deeper transformation, Vivian often recommends science-driven botanical formulations from brands like Josh Rosebrook or Corpa Flora. Another category she’s particularly excited about is fragrance. Truth Beauty has become something of a haven for clean, niche perfumes – formulations designed to avoid synthetic ingredients that can act as hormone disruptors. Lines such as Odesse and DedCool are helping redefine what non-toxic fragrance can be: modern, nuanced, and impressively long-lasting. Vivian plans to continue expanding this category, positioning the boutique as a regional destination for clean perfume lovers.

Beyond the retail floor, a treatment room offers personalized facials and skincare services that further shape the philosophy of the shop. As a holistic aesthetician, Vivian works directly with clients’ skin every day, and that hands-on experience informs everything she recommends. ‘I see what’s working and what isn’t,’ she says. ‘It keeps us grounded in real results, not just trends.’ Her approach to skincare is also refreshingly human. Rather than promising miracle transformations or eternal youth, Vivian embraces a philosophy that runs counter to much of the beauty industry’s messaging.

‘I’m not fearful of aging,’ she says. ‘Getting older is a gift that not everyone has the privilege of experiencing.’ Her goal isn’t to erase the years, but to support healthy, resilient skin that allows someone to feel confident at every stage of life. This perspective extends beyond products. Stress, sleep, hormones, nutrition, and overall wellbeing all influence skin health, and conversations with clients often explore these connections. Sometimes this means adjusting a routine; other times, Vivian may suggest exploring support from practitioners such as naturopaths. ‘Skincare is just one piece of a much bigger picture,’ she says.

Sustainability also plays an important role in the boutique’s ethos. One practical step is an in-store recycling program through TerraCycle, allowing clients to return empty skincare and beauty containers that local recycling programs can’t process. Equally compelling for Vivian is the shop’s embrace of a more mindful approach to consumption. ‘We don’t believe in overbuying,’ Vivian explains. ‘And we encourage clients to finish what they have before introducing something new.’ The goal is simple: invest in products you truly love – ones that support your goals and bring joy to daily routines.

Vivian sees the future of Truth Beauty as an evolution rather than a reinvention. The boutique has been part of the Uptown Waterloo landscape for more than thirteen years, and she hopes it will remain so for many more. Her plans include expanding partnerships with Canadian brands, refining facial treatments, and hosting events that allow clients to meet founders and discover new products.

Most of all, Vivian wants the shop to continue feeling like something special, ‘a place built on trust and connection, where clients experience something lasting and meaningful that they’ll remember long after they’ve walked through the doors.’
