UNCOVERING WELLINGTON COUNTY: PICCOLO FARM ORGANICS

Piccolo Farm Organics is a two-plot experiment in abundance rooted in the backyard of founders Steve D’Alimonte and Lisa Lopez and extending to the fields at Ignatius in Guelph, Ontario. Together, the Piccolo garden sites form a small but expressive canvas where Italian heritage meets regenerative practice. Hand tools replace tractors, mulch and cover crops protect the soil, and no-till methods coax out vegetables that are as flavourful as they are nourishing.

In this quiet rebuttal to industrial farming, vision reaches beyond yield. Piccolo is a celebration of heritage and a demonstration that culturally specific crops can thrive far from their native soils. Collaboration with fellow growers, minimal reliance on fossil fuels, and a reverence for flavour guide every decision.

Piccolo is devoted to varieties central to Italian cuisine – rapini, basil, garlic, onions, chili peppers, tomatoes, and salad greens – grown with an emphasis on soil health and taste. Fresh made focaccia, pasta and sauces crafted from the farm’s own produce are available year-round. And a summer CSF (Community Shared Food) subscription, which includes focaccia, pasta and sauces, along with fresh veggies, is available from June through October. Free CSF delivery is available in Guelph, Kitchener-Waterloo, and Cambridge. You can also find Piccolo’s products at the Guelph Farmers’ Market every Saturday morning, as well as at The Stone Store, Rowe Farms, and Benjamin’s Bodega in Guelph.

Small in scale, rooted in culture, and generous in flavour, Piccolo Farm Organics proves that the good life can grow close to home.

Like so many other remarkable farmers, producers, and food businesses that dot Guelph and Wellington County, Piccolo Farm Organics is a partner of Taste Real – a County of Wellington program that promotes local food and facilitates valuable connections among farmers, food businesses, and consumers alike. This includes producers like Steve and Lisa, whose business is a fantastic example of small(er)-scale farming and producing. Learn more at piccolofarmorganics.ca and tastereal.ca

BUILT ON BOOKS: THREE FOUNDATIONAL SHOPS IN UPTOWN WATERLOO

Almost nothing we carry defines us more clearly than the books in our bags: tactile objects filled with ideas and stories – testimonies to time well spent. They tag along with us, mark our days, and shape the rhythm of how we move through the world. In Uptown Waterloo, three long-standing independent bookstores – Carry-On Comics & Books (46 years young), Words Worth Books (42 years), and Old Goat Books (25 years) – offer distinct ways to build this bracket of everyday carry: a nostalgia-driven comic haven built for the thrill of discovery, a curated literary hub grounded in conversation, and a densely-packed used bookstore where the search is part of the reward. Together, these enduring fixtures map a reading life – charting not just what we read, but how we come to find it.

WHAT TOQUE CARRIES: INSIDE CHRIS’ FIELD KIT

In my line of work – as writer, photographer, editor, regional explorer – EDC isn't a trend. It's infrastructure. Most days I'm in motion: tracing backroads toward a brewhouse, mapping my way to an artist's studio, or sliding into the corner of a coffee shop where I turn field notes into final copy and RAW files into photographs that will pop on paper. My office is wherever I set my bag down. My tools make it possible.

Stratford – and, by extension, Perth County – lends itself to takeaway. A coffee to carry, a sandwich in hand, something sweet tucked alongside – then out into the streets for window shopping, into the theatres for a performance, or down to the riverbank for a nosh.
